SupervisionCandidates are required to conduct the analysis of at least three cases under supervision with three different supervising analysts. If the educational experience with early cases is felt to be insufficient, additional supervised work may be required. Analytic work with both men and women must be included. Although a terminated case is not required for graduation, at least one case must be considered by a supervisor as nearing and likely to go on to termination. The first two analytic cases are assigned from the Consultation and Treatment Service (CTS) whereas additional cases may be private. Fees from CTS cases go to the Institute and supervision is provided without charge. However, for private cases, the candidate keeps the fee and pays for supervision. The first case is usually begun in the middle of the first year of classes. Approval to begin a second case is usually given in the beginning of the second year if the first case is progressing well. After a significant period of work with these two cases, the candidate's developing capability as an analyst is reviewed and a third case is approved accordingly. The Progression Committee assigns all supervisors, but candidate requests are considered and granted when possible. A minimum of 150 hours of supervision is required for graduation. Prior to graduation, candidates are encouraged to broaden their analytic experience by taking on additional cases which can be unsupervised upon approval by the Progression and Executive Committees.
