Personal Analysis

Soon after acceptance into the program, candidates will be given a list of available approved training analysts from which to choose. Candidates in a therapeutic analysis with approved training analysts prior to applying to the program ordinarily continue with that analyst unless there are specific reasons for making a change.

Although a training analysis does not differ in any fundamental way from a therapeutic analysis, it is an essential part of training as one learns from first hand experience of the process. As in any analysis, the emphasis is on resolution of inner conflict, self-understanding and personal growth, which removes obstacles to the candidate's ability to function fully as an analyst.

The analysis of candidates is conducted four or five times per week. The personal analysis must be underway for at least nine months before course work can begin. However, since there is usually an interval of three years between beginning classes at the Institute, this requirement may be modified upon approval by the Progression and Executive Committees.

From an educational standpoint, it is necessary that the personal analysis continue through a significant portion of supervised case work in order to provide analytic exploration of one's functioning with a variety of cases. Should the analysis be terminated without this full opportunity, further analysis may be recommended during the later phases of training. Termination of the personal training analysis is not a requirement for graduation.

The setting and payment of fees are private matters between candidates and their training analyst. The Institute encourages flexibility in fee-setting to assist candidates in obtaining an affordable personal analysis.
